Another year, another Woody Allen movie to be excited about.
This time, Blue Jasmine starring Cate Blanchett, Sally Hawkins and Alec Baldwin sees the prolific writer and director sink his teeth murkier territory. After lighter fare with Midnight in Paris (2011) and To Rome with Love (2012), Allen yo-yos towards the dramatic side of his repertoire- a skill which has only sharpened as the iconic comic nears 80.
See for yourself if this trailer doesn’t hint at A Streetcar Named Desire in bounds…it wouldn’t be the first time Allen has paid homage to America’s cultural past.
THE PLOT: Hal and Jasmine Francis are a multi-millionaire couple in New York living the “good life” – mansions, yachts, and wealthy friends. Then smooth-talking Hal is exposed as a crooked financier and goes to prison and leaves her. With nowhere else to go, Jasmine moves into her sister’s lower-middle-class apartment in San Francisco to try to pull herself back together again.
THE STARS: Yet again, Allen has assembled an impressive cast, one which dominates the film’s posters: Alec Baldwin, Cate Blanchett, Louis C.K., Bobby Cannavale, Andrew Dice Clay, Sally Hawkins, Peter Sarsgaard and Michael Stuhlbarg star.
THE RELEASE DATE: Initially planned for a limited release in the US, Oscar-hype and positive box office predictions has seen the film being rolled out in further theatres. However, we won’t get to see it here in the UK until 27th September 2013. Make a note.
